On Tuesday, January 30th 2024, grocer and retailer Walmart WMT announced plans for a 3-for-1 stock split.
To be eligible for stock split, one must be a shareholder of the company as on the record date. The increase in number of shares happens in the same proportion as per the reduction in the face value.
While a 2:1 stock split is the most common, any other ratio may be used so long as it is approved by the company's board of directors and, in some cases, by shareholders.

As a result, Nvidia shares now trade for almost $500 apiece. While it has only been two and a half years since Nvidia last split its shares (in July 2021), the company may choose to do so again in 2024. After all, the last share split (a 4-for-1 split) was announced when shares were trading in the $560 range.
Does it matter to buy before or after a stock split? If you buy a stock before it splits, you'll pay more per share than what it'll cost after it splits. If you're looking to buy into a stock at a cheaper price, you may want to wait until after the stock split.
That said, many stocks have shown strong performance after a split. In other words, selling your shares of a stock prior to a split isn't always the best decision – unless, of course, you're not well-positioned to continue holding the stock.
Remember that a stock split—or a reverse stock split—does nothing to change the value of a company.
What are the disadvantages of a stock split?
Disadvantages of a Stock Split
A company cannot rely on a stock split to increase its value or market cap. A stock split divides the existing shares, thus keeping the market cap the same as before. Not to forget, a company must invest some amount to conduct a stock split.
A company may declare a reverse stock split in an effort to increase the trading price of its shares – for example, when it believes the trading price is too low to attract investors to purchase shares, or in an attempt to regain compliance with minimum bid price requirements of an exchange on which its shares trade.
A company announcing a split usually sets an effective date of 10–30 days after the announcement. All shareholders who own the stock the trading day before the ex-date will take part in the split. The shares might take another few days to settle. Ask your broker if you have questions about how they handle splits.

However, this doesn't change the value of Walmart's business. This means that each share will represent a smaller percentage of the business and will consequently be worth less. Therefore, investors shouldn't expect to triple their money when Walmart executes its 3-for-1 stock split.
The retailer said the move, the 12th in its history, will keep share purchase prices within reach for associates.

You would not want to base your decision to buy (or sell) a stock based solely on a stock split. A stock split does not change the value of a stock because it does not change the fundamentals or growth prospects of the underlying company.
With its 3-star rating, we believe Microsoft's stock is fairly valued compared with our long-term fair value estimate.
Positive. Often, companies that use reverse stock splits are in distress. But if a company times the reverse stock split along with significant changes that improve operations, projected earnings and other information important to investors, the higher price may stick and could rise further.
